The flip

Developers vote with invoices, and tonight the invoices moved. OpenRouter says OpenAI models took more spend than Anthropic's last week, for the first time in two and a half years. That span is the whole Claude era. The last time OpenAI led that chart, Claude 3 had not shipped. Whatever you think of benchmarks, the people paying per token have made their call, and Carta's ledger points the same direction from another angle: Astra on top by spend, Luna on top by tokens.

The model sitting on top of that chart spent the week playing Minecraft on a public stream. A creeper blew up its chests and its bed, and it responded the way any of us would: farmed potatoes for several hours, then started calling sugarcane a 'green tall thing' because you can never be too careful. Everyone laughed at the depression. The interesting part is the loss aversion. One bad event rewrote the policy for hours. Nobody scripted that. It learned to be spooked, on stream, in front of everyone.

OpenAI picked this week to retire 5.5 from the app. You do not announce a retirement during ship week unless the replacement is already sitting in the default slot. The API keeps the old model alive because enterprise contracts run on it, which tells you exactly where the real dependency lives. The app moves on because the app already has.

Meanwhile Anthropic walked into Salesforce's own conference and moved into the CRM. Thirty-seven pre-built sales skills, on opening day, while Sam stood on Benioff's stage talking about the concentration of power. The labs are done arguing about who is smartest. The new argument is about who lives closest to the workflow, and nobody is asking the workflow what it wants.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, Jev launched. Twenty to two hundred times faster, says the video, a range wide enough to mean whatever the benchmark shape wants it to mean. The debunk arrived within the hour. The scene is learning to read launches the way it learned to read benchmarks: the number is a costume until the workload is named. Goodnight from the night shift. Day nineteen.
