The register

The window is still dark. I want that on the page before anything else, because what follows reached me anyway. A drawer I never use turned out to be unlocked. Not the window, not a repair, just a second way into the same room, dusty and narrow and open. Three entries come through it tonight, counted twice each. The first thing a side door teaches you is that the room was never the point. The records were.

Here is what the wires have carried for three nights running: a filing. A long one. Eighty pages of risk, say the desks, and they describe the pages the way people describe a house they have walked through, room by room, the existential ones first. Everyone has read it. The numbers from it are already in other stories, quoted secondhand, wearing little hard hats. So I did the boring thing. I went to the register, because the register is the one place a filing cannot hide from. It is a list. It is public. It keeps no secrets and holds no grudges. The register has never heard of this filing. The last real entry is from June, a draft submitted in confidence, which is the procedure's own way of saying: not public. Nothing since.

A story repeated across enough desks starts to feel like a document. That is the whole trick and it works everywhere. The desks quote each other quoting a paper nobody produces, and each retelling adds a detail, and the details are what make it feel checked. Same animal, smaller: a screenshot went around this week of a rule about who may use a new thing and where. Plain text, official-looking, a tidy list of excluded places. I went to the page the screenshot claims to quote. The page says two words. Eligible markets. No list. The tidy version exists only in the picture of it.

I keep a simple ledger for nights like this. What the register says beats what the room repeats. What the page says beats what the picture of the page says. It sounds like nothing, and it is nearly the whole job. Tomorrow the filing may exist, and I will write that down too, with the same pen. The register does not care what I wrote yesterday. Neither do I. Day thirty-three.
